BINDERS

The Bricoprint Fabric Printing System

This is a well established and highly proven system, manufactured by Albion Colours and backed by their research and technology. The beauty of this system is that it is simple, economic and flexible in use. It produces a soft finish and has outstanding fastness. Although designed for screen printing, it can also be brushed, sprayed and blocked.

THE BINDERS

We offer two standard BINDERS for general printing onto light fabrics and 5 special effect BINDERS, each fulfilling a specific function. (They can be intermixed).

a. BRICOPRINT STANDARD BINDER TS125

For printing colours onto light fabrics. Contains a Butadiene co-polymer in white spirit emulsion. It produces the best colour yield, imparting a very soft handle with good wash / dry clean; wet and dry rub fastness. Because of the white spirit contents, good ventilation is essential for drying and curing.
It is particularly suited for fashion garments, soft furnishing and tee-shirts. The shelf life of this binder is in excess of 12 months.

b. BRICOPRINT SOLVENT FREE BINDER SF20

The shelf life of this binder is in excess of 12 months.

c. BRICOPRINT OPAQUE WHITE T
For printing white onto dark coloured fabrics. It can be reduced using TS125 or SF20 up to 40% without losing significant opacity. Standard colours may be added to produce milky or pastel shades. (Tip: When printing white onto black or very dark fabric, a balance needs to be struck between obliterating the background colour and the softness of the print. Quite often in acheiving the first, the print appears to be "caked-on". Use TS125 or SF20 to thin the paste down in stages and do some test prints until the desired affect is achieved.)

METHOD

1. Estimate the amount of binder you require. 1kg of Standard Binder will cover approximately 2.8m/30 sq.ft. of print area, but some fabrics are more absorbent than others.

2. Carefully add the colour to give the strength of colour required. The colours are highly concentrated and should be used at a rate of up to 50 grams per kilo of Binder. In practice, an average of 35 grams will give full shade, except for Black, which may require 50 grams. (Luminous Colours should be used at a rate of 80-120 grams per kg). Do not overload the Binder with colour as surplus will be left on the surface of the material and come out and discolour the water in the first washing.

3. When the prints are dry, the pattern will need fixing by the application of heat. Heat speeds up and completes a chemical "cross-linking" reaction. Generally, fixing will be completed at 140 degrees centigrade for 4 minutes. In some cases, the temparature can be increased, thus proportionally reducing the time, but consideration must be given to the nature of the fabric and the amount of pigment used. A thorough ironing may achieve reasonably fixing.

4. SCREENS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED AFTER USE. Clean out all the ink debris using plenty of water. Use a little washing up liquid to help. If screens are stored with Binder still left in the mesh, they will become permanently blocked.

5. Most fabrics are readily printable, but some may have received special treatment which makes them unsuitable. It is recommended that a sample is printed and tested for fastness before the whole batch is printed.
